The University of Kansas
The University of Kansas is a comprehensive public university with more than 28,000 students—8,000 of them graduate students—who study in 325 degree programs. The university enjoys an excellent national reputation, with 17 of its academic programs ranking among the top 30 nationally.
The Carnegie Foundation ranks KU as one of only 88 "Research I" universities. "The Rise of American Research Universities," published by Johns Hopkins University Press, cites KU as one of 21 rising public research universities. In 2003, KU research expenditures totaled $258 million million. The National Science Foundation ranks KU 53rd among public universities in science and engineering research and development expenditures.
KU includes the main campus in Lawrence, just 35 miles from metropolitan Kansas City; the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas; the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park; and a clinical branch of the KU School of Medicine in Wichita.
