The University of Missouri-Kansas City
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is a comprehensive, public university. Beginning as the private University of Kansas City in 1922, the institution became part of the four-campus University of Missouri System in 1963. UMKC consists of the Volker campus and the Hospital Hill campus where its Schools of Nursing, Dentistry and Medicine all reside in close proximity to UMKC’s affiliated institutions such as Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, Truman Medical Center, and Western Missouri Mental Health Center.
UMKC has strong programs in cell and molecular biology, bone biology and biomaterials, drug discovery, and shock trauma. It also boasts a nationally designated Center of Excellence in Women’s Health in partnership with Truman Medical Center. In 2006, UMKC scientists received more than $28.3 million in federal funding, of which $16.1 million was specifically for research. UMKC’s commitment to Kansas City's life sciences initiative will be strengthened by the Fall 2007 opening of its new $50.2 million Health Sciences Building. The building will bring UMKC’s School of Pharmacy to Hospital Hill to join its other health-science schools. UMKC plans a second building on its Hospital Hill campus – the Center for Health Sciences Research (196,000 sq. ft.) – to accommodate the expansion of interdisciplinary and translational research.
