Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics
Since 1897, Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics has evolved from a single "Mercy" bed for sick children to one of the top pediatric healthcare systems in the nation—a center of excellence for children's clinical care, medical education and research. The driving force behind this development and growth has been a single-minded dedication to quality, compassionate care for children and families of the Greater Kansas City region.
Children's Mercy recognizes that a competitive and vigorous research program is essential to providing cutting-edge medicine. Evidence of this commitment includes:
A state-of-the-art Pediatric Research Unit for children participating in clinical studies. Opened in 1999, the six-bed facility is a fully functioning inpatient nursing unit, the only research unit like it in North America.
A new Clinical Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Laboratory in which basic research is conducted on new medications for children. It is one of 13 pediatric pharmacology units funded by the National Institutes of Health.
A leading role in the burgeoning world of genetics—with emphasis in genomics, genetics research, cytomolecular genetics, education, clinical laboratories, biochemical genetics and clinical (inpatient and outpatient) genetics services.
The main campus, located in midtown Kansas City, Missouri, is complemented by its suburban Children's Mercy South location in Overland Park, Kansas. The 295-bed pediatric system set all-time patient utilization records last year with 12,800 admissions and more than 355,000 ambulatory and emergency visits.
