Nancy K. Jaax, D.V.M., ACVP, COL, USA (Retired)

Nancy Jaax, DVM, Ph.D., COL, USA (ret) was formerly the Chief of the Pathology Division at the United States Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Ft. Detrick, MD and consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Veterinary Pathology.
She received her DVM from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University, in 1973. She joined the Army Veterinary Corps and attained board certification in the specialty of Veterinary Pathology in 1983, and focused her subsequent research efforts on the elucidation of the pathogenesis of chemical and biological warfare agents.
The majority of her research and publications have focused on the pathogenesis of high hazard viruses, primarily Ebola and Marburg. She was a key participant in the Reston Ebola virus outbreak, in Reston VA – described in the NY Times bestseller, “The Hot Zone” by Richard Preston, and has lectured widely on emerging infectious disease and the pathophysiology of high hazard biological agents.
