Prior to joining the University of Missouri in 2004, Dr. Stewart was at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine as Professor of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology.
His research emphasis is on the regulation of genes responsible for virulence in a variety of organisms. Specifically, he examines global regulation of enterotoxin gene expression in Staphylococcus aureus, expression of sporulation-specific proteins in Bacillus, and is characterizing the leukotoxin of Fusobacterium necrophorum.
Dr. Stewart has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Microbiological Methods and the Journal of Bacteriology. He earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center (Dallas,TX) and completed postdoctoral training in Procaryotic Molecular Biology at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
