Shawnee lab gets new, local ownership

Kansas Venture Capital Inc. bought Kansas City Analytical Services Inc. (KCAS LLC), a bioanalytical laboratory spun off from AAIPharma Inc. KCAS performs tests to study how the drugs interact in humans or animals for pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs.

KU hospital accredited for heart failure program

University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City is the first hospital in Kansas and Missouri to have been named an accredited heart failure institute by the Healthcare Accreditation Colloquium. More info





Midwest Research Institute will get $14M from government contracts

Midwest Research Institute (MRI) is part of two teams that were awarded separate contracts, worth a combined $420M, to boost better use of fossil fuels and alternative energy. MRI will get about $14M for its work for the two contracts which both support the US. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory. MRI will lead cost-benefit analysis, which will include work in life-cycle assessment, strategic energy sector analysis and other areas that support energy infrastructure. More info





Informed consent tool expands nationally

A tool (PREDICT) developed by outcomes researchers at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute will help patients understand the risks, benefits, and potential outcomes of cardiovascular procedures based on their individual situation, and will be adopted at some of the nation’s most prestigious medical centers in early 2010. University of Kansas Cancer Center gets $10M for NCI designation effort

The University of Kansas Hospital has received a $10M gift from Joe and Jean Brandmeyer of El Paso, Texas, founders of Enturia Inc. The funds are earmarked for the KU Cancer Center’s effort to achieve cancer center designation from the National Cancer Institute and will be used to endow the “Joe and Jean Brandmeyer chair and professor of radiation oncology” and support other patient-care and research priorities needed to achieve cancer center designation. KU Pharmacy Residency Program named best in nation

The University of Kansas Pharmacy Residency Program has been named best in the nation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The award recognizes a combined postgraduate education/pharmacy residency program in health-system pharmacy. More info





Midwest Research Institute gets LEED Certification

The $25M renovation of Midwest Research Institute’s (MRI) 50-year-old headquarters in Kansas City has received LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. MRI kept the same 250,000-square-foot footprint, but increased its lab and office space by almost 50 percent allowing for 150 more employees. The energy-savings measures cut almost 600 metric tons of carbon dioxide from 2008 to 2009. The renovation was designed by PGAV Architects and JE Dunn Construction handled construction. More info
