MU professor gives stroke patients hope
Guy McCormack, clinical professor and chair of the occupational therapy and occupational science department at the University Missouri School of Health Professions, says stroke patients can regain function with more time and encouragement based on new information about how the brain works and its ability to change and adapt. McCormick’s insight into this matter was published in OT Practice Magazine. More info

KU receives $6.85 million to enhance vaccines
The National Institutes of Health awarded the University of Kansas a five-year, $6.85 million grant to boost the effectiveness and safety of vaccines. KU is one of six universities selected to research how to stretch the vaccine supply, increase vaccine potency and decrease side effects. More info

MU research may help screen children for autism
Researchers at the University of Missouri have developed a pupil response test that is 92.5 percent accurate in separating children with autism from those with typical development. Studies show early intervention can improve an autistic child’s developmental outcome. This test could be used as a biomarker in early screening. More info

Health systems, cardiology practices unite
to advance patient outcomes
HCA Midwest Health System aligned with Midwest Cardiology Associates and Carondelet Health with Kansas City Cardiology Associates in late October to decrease cardiac costs for patients and improve patient care. These partnerships are among several beginning to take place across the nation. More info

Children’s Mercy gets $1.9 million
to help endangered infants
The Department of Health and Human Services gave Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics a $1.9 million grant for its Team for Infants Endangered by Substance Abuse Program. The grant will finance operations in helping Kansas City-area families with infants born to women affected by substance abuse or HIV for the next four years. Since 1990 the program has helped more than 400 KC area families. More info

Clinipace buys Worldwide Clinical Research
Overland Park-based Worldwide Clinical Research Inc. and Morrisville, N.C.-based Clinipace merged in late October to strengthen its services and presence in the worldwide market. The new company, Clinipace Worldwide, will keep offices in both locations. More info

KU’s Innovation Center to carry Hemenway’s name
The Kansas Board of Regents approved naming KU’s three-year old Life Sciences Innovation Center in Kansas City, Kan., after former Chancellor Robert Hemenway. The $57 million center’s new name is now The Robert E. Hemenway Life Sciences Innovation Center. More info
